Aluminum gutter does not usually leak through the middle of a run. It leaks where two things meet: a sectional joint, an inside or outside corner, an end cap, or the outlet where the downspout drops out of the trough. Those joints rely on sealant, and sealant is the part of the system with the shortest life in Florida heat and UV.

A leak that has been running for a while leaves its own evidence — a stained fascia board, a bleached stripe down the wall, or a washed-out trench in the bed below. We trace the water back to the joint rather than sealing whatever looks wet. Sectional gutter with several leaking joints is the classic case where a seamless run removes the failure points instead of resealing them one at a time.

A gutter that dips in the middle or has separated from the roofline is telling you something about what it is fastened to. Common causes are hangers spaced too far apart, fasteners that pulled loose, a run carrying the weight of standing water and wet debris, or fascia that has softened enough that screws no longer hold.

That last one matters most. Re-screwing a gutter into rotted board buys a season at best, so we check the fascia condition before quoting the gutter work — and where the board needs attention we handle it as soffit and fascia work first, then re-hang the gutter to solid backing at correct spacing and pitch.

Overflow is the problem homeowners most often misdiagnose. Blockage is only one cause. A gutter can be perfectly clean and still spill if it is undersized for the roof area feeding it, if there are too few downspouts for the length of the run, if the pitch is flat or reversed, or if two roof planes funnel into one short section.

So we look at the whole path before recommending anything. If debris is genuinely the cause, a clean-out and possibly gutter guards solve it. If capacity is the cause, cleaning will not, and you will be back in the same spot after the next storm.

Downspouts come loose at the straps, separate at the elbows, get crushed by a mower or ladder, or simply sit in the wrong place — discharging into a corner where water has nowhere to go. A downspout that has come apart mid-run puts the full volume of that gutter against the wall.

Repairs here are usually straightforward: refasten, replace a damaged section, add an outlet, or move the drop. Where the water is landing too close to the slab, downspout extensions carry it out to somewhere it can drain, and where the yard has nowhere to send it, a French drain is the honest answer rather than a longer pipe into the same low spot.

Water sitting in a gutter after the rain stops means the trough is not falling toward the outlet. Gutters are hung with a slight, deliberate slope; that slope can be lost when hangers give, when a section is re-hung by someone who eyeballed it, or when the fascia line itself is uneven.

Standing water is not just cosmetic. It is weight the hangers carry permanently, it accelerates corrosion at the seams, and it holds debris in place so the next blockage forms faster. Re-pitching a run is a repair we do routinely, and it is usually cheaper than the consequences of leaving it.

Florida storm seasons dent gutters, tear runs loose, drop limbs through the trough and pull downspouts off the wall. Isolated damage is very often repairable: a crushed length can be replaced and colour-matched to the rest of the run, and a torn-off downspout can be rebuilt.

Damage spread across several runs, or damage combined with an already ageing system, is a different calculation — and one worth having in writing before insurance or budget decisions get made. Note that storm and hurricane damage is not covered by our workmanship warranty; repair work of that kind is quoted as ordinary paid work.

Repair usually makes sense when the system is fundamentally sound and the problem is contained: one or two leaking joints, a single sagging run, a damaged section, a downspout issue, or a pitch correction. You keep the gutters you have and spend money only on what failed.

Replacement usually makes more sense when the failures are systemic: leaks appearing in new places each season, corrosion along the trough, a run that has been re-hung several times, extensive fascia damage behind the gutter, or a system that is simply undersized for the roof. In those cases repair spending repeats itself, and a properly sized seamless system ends it.

Sizing is the part most often overlooked. A home with large roof planes, a steep pitch, or a tile or metal roof can shed more water than a standard 5-inch or 6-inch trough can carry, and no amount of resealing changes that. Where recurring overflow traces back to capacity, 7-inch gutters are the fix rather than another repair visit.
