Sunshine State Gutters looks at each property before recommending how to handle downspout water. The slope and grade of the lot, where each downspout currently ends, what surrounds the house and where water can appropriately be released all shape the answer. Depending on those conditions, that answer may be an above-ground extension, a buried drainage line, a pop-up emitter, a drainage or catch basin, or a combination of them.
There is no single length or layout we apply to every home. Brian decides the discharge approach on site, based on the individual property.
Downspout Drainage Options
These are the drainage approaches Sunshine State Gutters installs. Not every property suits every option, and a single home may use more than one.
Above-Ground Downspout Extensions
An above-ground extension continues the discharge point beyond the bottom of the downspout, where the property allows water to be directed that way. Above-ground downspout components can be color-matched to coordinate with the gutter system and the exterior of the home.
Buried Downspout Drainage
When an above-ground extension isn't the preferred solution, downspout water can be routed through a buried drainage line instead, so the water travels underground rather than across the yard.
Pop-Up Emitters
Where appropriate, a buried drainage line can end at a pop-up emitter: an outlet set at ground level that releases the water at the end of the line.
Drainage and Catch Basins
Sunshine State Gutters can also install drainage or catch basins as part of a drainage solution when the property calls for one.
How We Determine Where the Water Should Go
We don't apply one arbitrary extension length to every house. Brian evaluates the property and decides the discharge approach based on what he sees there, including the slope and grade of the lot, where the house sits on the property, where the existing downspouts are, which areas can practically accept the water, and whether an above-ground or buried solution makes more sense.
The goal is simple: send the water from each downspout to a place on the property where it can appropriately be released. What that looks like differs from one home to the next, which is why the recommendation comes after seeing the property, not before.
Above Ground or Buried?
Above-ground extensions can be a straightforward solution when the property allows water to be directed appropriately without burying the drainage.
Buried drainage can be considered when routing the water underground is the more practical solution for the property. Neither approach is better in every case; the right choice depends on the property, and we'll explain why we're recommending one over the other.
Downspout Extensions vs. French Drains
Downspout drainage starts with water the gutter system has already collected from the roof. It takes that concentrated flow at the downspout and routes it somewhere more appropriate.
A French drain is a separate drainage solution. It may be appropriate when the problem involves water collecting in, or moving through, an area of the property, rather than simply needing to move a downspout's discharge point. Some properties need one, some need the other, and some need both.
Drainage Is Part of the Gutter System
Roof runoff enters the gutter, drains through the outlet into the downspout, and leaves at the discharge point. Each step depends on the one before it, so drainage works best when it is planned together with the gutters rather than added as an afterthought. An overflowing or poorly performing system is not automatically a downspout-extension problem. The gutters, outlets or downspouts themselves may need attention, and that can only be confirmed by looking at them.
